It really has been a topsy-turvy season for Chelsea.

The Stamford Bridge side took to life under new boss Maurizio Sarri well enough, matching the early pace set by Manchester City and Liverpool.

However, Sarri’s infamous ‘Sarri-ball’ has since been found out by opposition teams, with the Blues dropping dramatically to sixth after a chastening 6-0 drubbing at the hands of reigning champions City.

They were then dumped out of the FA Cup at home by Manchester United as the home crowd turned on Sarri, making their feelings towards the Italian brutally clear.

And, just when Chelsea fans may have been thinking that the mire couldn’t possibly get any deeper, the Londoners were slapped with a two-transfer window signing ban for the illegal recruitment of 29 young players.

Ouch.

It is difficult to see how Chelsea will approach the coming months but there may be some light at the end of the tunnel, yet.

Rumours recently emerged that a certain Zinedine Zidane is interested in taking up the Stamford Bridge hot seat should Sarri be given the sack - which is looking all the more likely with each passing game.

However, the former Real Madrid boss reportedly outlined some rather stringent conditions that would need to be set in place for him to sign on the dotted line.

Zidane believes the club simply have to hold onto Eden Hazard and that at least £200 million needs to be invested in the playing squad before they can be challenging for titles.

Quite a difficult task to spend £200 million on new players, when you are not allowed to sign any, though.

However, reports suggest Chelsea are set to appeal the ban and, should they get their way, may still be eligible to sign new players in the summer before the ban kicks in.

With that in mind, The Sun reports that Zidane still has a desire to take up the mantle in West London, and could be set to splash an obscene amount of cash in a wild shopping spree in a bid to improve the squad.

He looks certain to have his wishes granted too, with the same report detailing that the Chelsea hierarchy will gladly hand him his almighty £200 million war chest.

With players like Mauro Icardi, Isco, and Koulibally all rumoured to be in Zidane’s site’s, plus the imminent arrival of Christian Pulisic, next season could prove to be a very exciting one at Stamford Bridge.

Perhaps it’s not all doom and gloom just yet, Chelsea fans.
