Wayne Rooney admits he would have voted for Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2018 Ballon d'Or

There was a new winner of the Ballon d'Or in 2018.

From 2008-2017, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the only two men to win the award.

The two won five each during that 10 year spell.

But, in 2018, it was Luka Modric that picked up the trophy.

Modric enjoyed a standout year, winning the Champions League with Real Madrid and then winning the Golden Ball during Croatia's run to the World Cup final.

Despite his achievements, many felt that Cristiano Ronaldo should have won the accolade.

Ronaldo was arguably more influential than Modric in Real Madrid's Champions League triumph, scoring 15 goals in their campaign.

He also had another stellar season as a whole, scoring 44 goals in 44 games, before continuing his goalscoring exploits at Juventus.

And among those to think Ronaldo should have won is former Manchester United teammate, Wayne Rooney.

Luka Modric celebrates winning the 2018 Ballon d'Or

Rooney conceded that Modric is a 'fantastic player' but admitted he would have voted for Ronaldo.

"Luka Modric is a fantastic player," Rooney told DAZN, per Goal. "I think his passing is great and the way he moves with the ball.

"Actually he doesn't look that quick to the eye but when you play against him he glides past players. He's a fantastic player, he's had a great career.

"I don't think he's the best player in the world but in terms of the year is he worthy of it? Of course, he is. He had a great year with Real Madrid and obviously had a great run as captain with Croatia.

"I think if it was player-voted I would have voted for Ronaldo this year, but taking nothing away from Luka Modric. He won it so he deserves it."

Rooney then went on to praise Modric's style of play.

"He wasn't a midfield player who before the game you would think: 'oh no, we're playing against Luka Modric'," Rooney added.

"He's not like a Patrick Vieira-style player or Roy Keane where he's commanding, he's a different kind of player.

"But his ability, his passing, he can shoot with both feet. As I said before, he takes the ball and glides, creates opportunities, so he's a fantastic player."
