The World Boxing Council have confirmed that Tyson Fury will seek an interim fight before any potential rematch with Deontay Wilder. It was initially thought that the two heavyweight superstars would meet as soon as possible after their epic draw back in December at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The WBC posted a statement on Twitter confirming the news, which hasn't exactly gone down well with boxing fans.

The WBC wrote: "@BronzeBomber vs @Tyson_Fury is officially not happening next. The @WBCBoxing has received communications as our process and while Wilder confirmed its willingness to fight the rematch, Fury will take on another fight with expectations to do rematch at a later date."

Fury is now likely to fight either Oscar Rivas or Joseph Parker after signing a mega-money deal with Top Rank - the biggest rival to Showtime, who air Wilder's fights.

And after the news, the Bronze Bomber was quick to voice his frustration and mock Fury on Twitter.

He's not a happy man. Wilder is now likely to face his WBC mandatory Dominic Breazeale, who Anthony Joshua beat back in 2017.

That fight essentially means Dillian Whyte's opportunity to face Breazeale is now dead in the water.

The heavyweight division has certainly been a bit of a mess in 2019, with the top fighters in the division unlikely to meet in the ring for the foreseeable future.

However, Joshua recently stated to talkSPORT that a mega-fight with Wilder could happen in the latter stages of the year.

AJ said: “In terms of becoming undisputed [heavyweight champion of the world] it’s hard because I’ve got until June 1st and I need to focus on that.

“Let’s say we have a crystal ball and I beat Miller up, we could have that fight [Wilder] in December if we can put whatever issues there are to bed.

“But in terms of Fury, I think that could happen sooner, he’s a UK-based fighter isn’t he? I feel like that should be easier because the fight would be in the UK.

“It would be easier to work with a broadcaster in the UK and you’ve seen we have the best fight fans in the world and the biggest sporting event in the world.”
