WWE invokes clause in The Hardy Boyz contract

This week seems to be the week of returns in the WWE, as fans were treated to two more of them on SmackDown Live last night.

On Monday Night Raw, Roman Reigns returned to the WWE after announcing his cancer was in remission, while Batista also returned to start a WrestleMania storyline with Triple H.

On SmackDown, by order of Vince McMahon, Kevin Owens returned at the start of the show to take Kofi Kingston's spot in the WWE Championship match vs Daniel Bryan at Fastlane.

Matt Hardy also returned on the blue brand last night to team up with his brother, Jeff Hardy, in a tag team match against The Bar.

The Hardy Boyz were able to win the match as Matt hit the Twist of Fate on Sheamus before Jeff landed on top of him with a Swanton Bomb for the pinfall victory.

Hardy Boyz Current WWE Deal

Some fans might have been surprised to see Matt on SmackDown last night, as he had been teasing the countdown to the expiration of his current WWE deal on social media as of late.

However, according to PWInsider, The Hardy Boyz will not be leaving WWE this year.

They have reported that WWE has involved a clause in Matt and Jeff Hardy's existing deal, rolling it over for a third year. Had they not rolled over the contract, it would have expired next month.

The Hardy Boyz made their WWE return at WrestleMania 33 after months speculation, signing a two-year deal.

They would go on to win the Raw Tag Team Championships on the same night in a ladder match vs The Bar, Gallows and Anderson, and Enzo Amore and Big Cass.

After their run as a tag team for a year, Jeff went on a singles run after he was traded to SmackDown in the 2018 Superstar Shake-up, while Matt teamed up with Bray Wyatt as The Deleter of Worlds.

Matt took time off half way through 2018 as his back fusing with his pelvis. This lead to speculation of his possible retirement, but he denied these reports.

Matt's match on SmackDown last night was his first televised match in the WWE since August last year, where he lost alongside Wyatt in a Raw tag team title match vs The Revival and The B-Team.

Now The Hardy Boyz are back together on SmackDown, it looks like they're going to be involved in the SmackDown Tag Team title scene ahead of WrestleMania.
