As the football world comes to terms with Emiliano Sala's tragic death, complications over his transfer from FC Nantes to Cardiff City continue to make headlines.

According to the Independent, Nantes have reported Cardiff to FIFA after they missed the deadline for the first instalment of £5m, which was due on Tuesday.

Cardiff owe the French side £15m but are withholding payment until they are satisfied with various anomalies surrounding the deal.

A statement from FIFA read: "We can confirm that we have received yesterday evening a claim from FC Nantes against Cardiff City in connection with the transfer of Emiliano Sala.

"We are looking into the matter and consequently we have no further comments at this stage."

Sala's private jet went missing over the English Channel on January 21, 2019, as he flew from France to his new club in south Wales.

Wreckage of the Piper Malibu was soon located on the seabed off Guernsey and a body was recovered on February 7. It was later identified as Sala.

Pilot David Ibbotson's body is yet to be found, but investigations into the plane crash have raised concerns over the validity of the 60-year-old's license.

Ibbotson could only fly passengers in the European Union on a cost-sharing basis, not commercial flights, so Cardiff are looking into the way the transfer was handled.
