Brendan Rodgers was persuaded to sign Roberto Firmino for Liverpool

Brendan Rodgers has returned to the Premier League with Leicester City.

Leicester sacked Claude Puel earlier this week and swiftly appointed Rodgers as his successor.

The 46-year-old joins after two and a half successful seasons with Celtic, where he won seven major honours.

The last time Rodgers was in the Premier League was with Liverpool.

He joined the Reds in 2012, and nearly won the club's first ever Premier League title in the 2013/14 season.

However, his team just fell short and, after a decline in form in the following seasons, Rodgers was sacked in 2015.

One of the last signings he made for Liverpool was Roberto Firmino in a £36.9 million move from Hoffenheim.

The Brazilian is perhaps one of the best signings Liverpool have made since the turn of the decade.

He has been influential in the past few seasons, having made 175 appearances and scored 61 times.

Brendan Rodgers did not want to sign Roberto Firmino

He is definitely one of the best signings Liverpool made during Rodgers' with the club.

However, Rodgers isn't actually responsible for bringing him to Liverpool.

A report from the Independent has revealed how the Northern Irishman had to be persuaded to sign Firmino.

In the summer of 2014, Liverpool signed Mario Balotelli against his wishes.

Brendan Rodgers only agreed to sign Roberto Firmino if he was allowed to purchase Christian Benteke

That move turned out to be a failure and so, the following summer, Rodgers was reluctant to sign Roberto Firmino, but agreed with Michael Edwards that he would sanction a move for the Brazilian if he was allowed to purchase Christian Benteke.

Their report reads: "Having been persuaded to sign Balotelli the previous summer, Rodgers dug his heels in twelve months later and effectively agreed with Michael Edwards that if the sporting director in waiting allowed him to sign Christian Benteke, he would not get in the way of Roberto Firmino’s recruitment."

Amazing. Rodgers went on to buy Benteke for £41 million, who went on to be a flop on Merseyside.

But if Rodgers' request was refused, then it is likely Firmino would never have signed for the club.
