Manchester United club captain Antonio Valencia is set to leave the club in the summer.United opted not to trigger an extension on Valencia’s contract, an option that expired on Friday evening. It’s understood the 33-year-old is keen to continue his playing career but it seems the right-back will be looking for a new club at the end of the season after 10 years at Old Trafford.Of course, the club could still offer him a new contract before his current deal expires but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted that was unlikely.Valencia has made 338 appearances since Sir Alex Ferguson signed him from Wigan Athletic in June 2009 but Solskjaer is hoping the player can get back fit before the end of the campaign.

“He’s still not 100% fit, he is still working to get back fit and he’s had a fantastic career here at Man United and in England,” said the Norwegian. “He is one of the Premier League winners left in the dressing room but at the moment I’m not sure if Man United and Antonio will agree on the next year.

“So it depends if he gets back on the pitch as well in the next few months but he’s the captain, a great servant to the club. So hopefully I can get him on the pitch and show what he can do, or he can get himself 100% fit and back on the pitch.”

And on Friday night, Valencia seemingly confirmed that he would be leaving the club in the summer.

He tweeted: “Lago Agrio is a very humble town in Ecuador. When I was a child, I never imagined travel to Europe. Thanks to God for letting me play 10 years in the best club in the world: @ManUtd. Now I am focused on my recovery so I can end the season playing at Old Trafford!”

Emotional stuff.

And to prove just how popular Valencia is in this United squad, his teammate Eric Bailly replied with: "I love you more than my wife brother."

The Ecuadorian will just be concentrating on getting back fully fit to help United finish in the top-four this season.

And Valencia may have the opportunity to end his United career perfectly - by lifting the FA Cup at Wembley.

United are through to the quarter-finals of the competition and face a tough trip to Wolves.
