He may be the man you cannot see for much of the year nowadays inside a WWE ring, but John Cena loves giving back to the fans and his fellow superstars and friends.

Well-informed fans knew Cena was only returning for a short stint at the beginning of 2019, starting with a January 1 appearance on SmackDown, the first episode of 2019.

And in that short amount of time he seemed to 'put over' quite a few of his fellow superstars, something that he may feel like he owes due to his considerable time away from the ring in recent months.

The first star he wanted to share the ring with was Becky Lynch, and the two had a bit of a showdown on New Years Day.

It led to a mixed tag team match though, with Lynch getting the victory for herself and Cena against Andrade and Zelina Vega.

In a recent interview with Uproxx, Cena praised the Lasskicker's attitude and sees a lot of his former self in Lynch's new character.

Per NoDQ, Cena said: “We are in the entertainment business. Whatever the consumer finds most entertaining, regardless of sex, race, creed, color, religion anything. What the consumer wants, WWE will give.

"I think Daniel Bryan a few years ago in the main event of WrestleMania was a great example of that. And I think the women that are supposedly within the main event of WrestleMania this year were pushing forward toward that historic, monumental occasion.

"I’m one of those people who think that it should’ve happened a whole lot earlier, but I’m very proud that our audience is at a point where they’re screaming at the top of their lungs, ‘Hey, this is what we want to see.’

"I was so extremely happy for Becky Lynch to be able to find this personality that she carved out of thin air and almost out of desperation and become so successful with it.

“I was about to be fired. I was in a Becky Lynch-type scenario where I was forgotten and I was about to be let go and I took a chance on myself.

"I took a chance on redefining my character and it worked and I’ve never stopped. And I wasn’t the corporate headquarters first, second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth choice, but the audience began to make noise. And I connected with the audience and the rest is history."

Some accused Cena of leeching on to Lynch's popularity at the time of their segment, but his heart-warming words when he didn't have to compliment her certainly prove he's being genuine when he speaks of his respect for her.

There's an argument to be had as to whether or not Lynch is now the biggest full-time star in the company - something that Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey would have something to say about, but the females of WWE are definitely deserving of closing out WrestleMania this year, and having the blessing of someone like Cena can only help them further.
