Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's unbeaten league run as Manchester United manager continues after a nervy 3-2 victory over Southampton.

Yan Valery had opened the scoring with a superb finish from outside the box, though it was to be cancelled out by an even more impressive screamer from Andreas Pereira.

The Red Devils' fortunes fell to more experienced hands in the second half as Romelu Lukaku sealed the three points with a brace, sandwiching James Ward-Prowse's inch-perfect free-kick.

The scoreline might have looked more comfortable had Paul Pogba not missed a penalty in injury time.

The Frenchman's characteristic run-up was followed by a rather tame effort down the middle, saved well by the feet of Angus Gunn.

It came as a surprise to many United fans that the World Cup winner was even on penalty duties.

Not only has he now missed three this season, it seemed only fair that Lukaku would be given a chance to seal his hat-trick.

However, the Belgian has eased fears of a dispute between the two players over the spot-kick, insisting he wanted Pogba to take it after all.

Lukaku: Pogba the right choice

"I am a striker and I wanted Paul Pogba to score the penalty," he told the BBC.

"He has been on a good run but he has been an important player for us and will bounce back."

Very diplomatic from the former Everton man. Who knows how he felt privately, but he wasn't going to call out his team-mate in front of the media.

Reflecting on overcoming a dogged Southampton side, Lukaku added:

"We knew we had to win the game today and did it.

"Not our best game but we have to be happy.

"I was focused on the win and help my team-mates. The manager gave me another chance today.

"We have to look one game at a time and are working hard on the training ground. We are ready for the challenge."

The 25-year-old now has four goals in two games and looks to be hitting form at a vital time, with United facing the unenviable task of turning over a two-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
