Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to be edging closer towards being named permanent manager at Manchester United.

Saturday's 3-2 win over Southampton was the Norwegian's 13th victory out of 16 games since replacing Jose Mourinho in mid-December, which is an outstanding record.

United chiefs have been hugely impressed by Solskjaer, so much so that they're prepared to shelve their interest in Mauricio Pochettino.

An announcement is expected before the end of the season, while The Sun claim Solskjaer has already shaken hands with chief executive Ed Woodward on the job.

Just like Mourinho, Solskjaer was put up in the Lowry Hotel by United when he took over as manager.

But whereas Mourinho spent 127 weeks in the five-star hotel and racked up an £800,000 bill, Solskjaer only stayed for nine weeks and moved out recently.

However, he's encountered a rather awkward problem since leaving.

During his time as a United player, Solskjaer lived in a five-bedroom mansion in Cheshire worth £4m. When it seemed he didn't have a future in Manchester a few years ago, he put it up for sale.

No buyers came forward, though, and then a certain Virgil van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton for £75m and was on the lookout for a property to rent.

If you haven't put two and two together already, it turns out Van Dijk is currently staying at Solskjaer's home, which has forced United's manager to go house hunting.

Solskjaer's tenancy agreement with Van Dijk means it isn't as simple as telling the Dutch centre-back to vacate, so he needs to find somewhere else for him and his family to live.

A source told The Sun: "The property is the one Ole and his family lived in since his time at United and when he moved away it was eventually put up for sale.

"But when no takers came it was offered for rent – and when Van Dijk signed for Liverpool he came to see it and loved it.

"Ole probably never thought he would be coming back to Manchester but now he is it really is ironic he can’t move back into his old place which he still owns.

"There are a few grins from people who know that Van Dijk is the tenant – a player for one of United’s fiercest rivals!"

Certainly one of the stranger football stories in recent memory, especially because it involves a Liverpool player keeping a Manchester United manager out of his own house.
