One of the most talked about fights in UFC history is the first fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz which took place three years ago this week.McGregor and Diaz fought against each for the first time back in 2016 at UFC 196. The fight only took place because McGregor's original opponent, lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, suffered a foot injury that forced him off the card.Notorious was dominant in the opening round of the clash, but he felt his lungs burning in the second, causing the Stockton native to move forward to take advantage.Diaz then put together a fantastic combination that had McGregor hurt. In response, Conor dove in for a takedown, but Nate was able to take full advantage. He moved to the mount and then he eventually positioned himself on McGregor’s back where he locked in the rear naked choke to end the fight. This was the first time McGregor tasted defeat under the UFC banner.

McGregor reflected back on this defeat recently on Twitter and said: "What a sequence! One of the craziest fights ever. Also the birth of McGregor FAST!

"The rematch was voted the greatest fight in UFC history.

"My last one was a small bit wild also haha. I love this game. This is my 3rd level of income at this point. I just do it because I love it."

McGregor was able to look back and learn from this loss for the next time he stepped foot inside the Octagon against the Stockton native, as he earned a majority decision victory over Diaz at UFC 202.

Notorious continued: "It’s fascinating to me watching that loss back. Then watching the come back. We can always come back!

"Anyone can do something once. It’s Can you do it twice is the question. That’s why I doubled up on the belts every time. Any fool can do it once."

McGregor hasn’t fought since last October when he fell to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the main event at UFC 229. He's currently suspended until April after being involved in a brawl after that clash.

He is able to return to the Octagon on April 6. Reports have circulated that he could face Donald Cerrone in his return fight, or possibly complete the trilogy vs Diaz.
