Jose Mourinho is reportedly set to be offered the chance to return to Real Madrid as manager.

Sources have informed the Telegraph that Los Blancos are "almost 100 percent sure" they can lure the Portuguese back to the Bernabeu.

Mourinho has been out of a job since December, when he was shown the exit door by Manchester United after a tumultuous start to the 2018/19 season.

The Special One has stated on a number of occasions that he is far from finished as a manager and could return to arguably the biggest job in world football.

Santiago Solari's short reign as manager has been pretty disastrous, with Real crashing out of three competitions in the space of just seven days.

Two losses at the Bernabeu to Barcelona saw them exit the Copa del Rey and fall 12 points behind their eternal rivals in the La Liga title race.

And to top off a horrendous week, Los Blancos' 1000+ day dominance in the Champions League was brought to a humiliating end by Ajax last night.

The Dutch side overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit with an emphatic 4-1 win in the Spanish capital, with Real fans crying out for Solari to resign after the game.

The Argentine signed a contract until 2021 after replacing Julen Lopeteugi.

After Real's European humiliation, Mourinho told El Chiringuito: “I am proud of that, but Real Madrid have a manager. Obviously it’s a reason to be proud but nothing more than that.

“There has been nothing (between me and the club) – not even the minimum contact. I haven’t done that (spoken to the players or the president). Like you say, there are rumours. But rumours in football are bad.”

Real president Florentino Perez still has a very strong relationship with Mourinho, while the fans still have affection for him despite his first unsuccessful reign.

With Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas both gone - two players Mourinho clashed with - the stage looks well and truly set for his speedy return to elite-level management.
