Lionel Messi has been selected in Argentina's latest squad. The legendary Barcelona forward hasn't featured for his country since the 2018 World Cup, where Argentina were eliminated by eventual winners France. There was initial speculation that Messi would never feature for his country again, having previously retired from international duties after the disappointment of the 2016 Copa America. However, in a similar vein to his rival Cristiano Ronaldo, he simply decided to take the remainder of 2018 off and has returned to the fold in the New Year.It will give Messi the opportunity to end his long wait for an international trophy, especially when the next edition of the Copa America rolls around in the summer.

Messi returns to the team

Messi joins fellow forwards Gonzalo Martinez, Paulo Dybala, Angel Correa, Lautaro Martinez, Dario Benedetto and Matias Suarez in the squad.

Argentina have games to come with Venezuela and Morocco this month.

Lionel Scaloni - the president of the Argentina FA - had said has year: “I hope, want and believe Leo will come back to the national team."

The 2019 Copa America approaches

And his wishes have been answered, with Messi getting to link up with his compatriots once again, while strikers such as Sergio Aguero and Gonzalo Higuain miss out.

The Copa America has proven a frustrating competition for Messi in the past, but he'll be hoping his fortunes change in Brazil this summer.

With a few international friendlies under his belt, the 31-year-old will be hoping to transfer some positive form into the tournament.

Argentina can be found in group B alongside Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar.

Although it's certainly not the last chance for Messi, opportunities are beginning to dry up and the 2022 World Cup will almost definitely be his last shot at the biggest title of all.

However, for now, it's just brilliant to see him back on the international stage.
