Liverpool fans have long been awaiting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's return from injury. The England international ruptured ligaments in his right knee in the Champions League semi-final against Roma towards the end of last season. It's still unclear whether he'll be able to feature for the first team between now and the end of the current campaign. However, it was a huge positive to see him back on a football pitch when he turned out for the u23's against Derby. The 25-year-old was employed in central midfield and played some impressive long-range passes, looking confident on the ball for the first 40 minutes. Highlights of Oxlade-Chamberlain's return

Gerrard admits Liverpool title win wouldn't heal wounds Unfortunately, that was as much time he was afforded as he was substituted before half-time due to a hamstring problem.According to Goal's Liverpool correspondent Neil Jones, he gave a thumbs up when asked by journalists if he was OK.

Even if it was just a precaution - and it should be remembered that he was only meant to play the first half anyway - it's worrying to see the midfielder picking up another injury.

The only real positive is that it wasn't his knee.

Liverpool have posted an update on his fitness on their official website and he will undergo a scan on Saturday to assess the damage.

Neil Critchley, boss of the U23's, is quoted:

“He obviously had a bit of an issue but hopefully it’s nothing major. The bonus for him is that it’s not his knee, so he’s delighted there are no problems with that.

“He was enjoying himself, he was happy to be back playing. Hopefully when he wakes up in the morning, fingers crossed it’s nothing and only a precaution.

“Hopefully it’s not as bad as it first looked. He was looking over [to the bench] and we weren’t sure. It’s maybe some kind of muscle problem and maybe one to assess tomorrow.

“What was good is that he was sensible. He came off quite quick. He has handled that situation quite well.”

However, footage from the Reds' 3-1 victory quite clearly shows the former Arsenal man clutching his hamstring with just 13 minutes on the clock.

Liverpool can only hope he hasn't paid the price for his persistence in wanting to stay on.

It might not have been wise, but it's hard not to sympathise with Oxlade-Chamberlain given that he was last in action almost a year ago.
