Matthijs de Ligt and Virgil Van Dijk playing together at Liverpool 'could happen'

Matthijs de Ligt has lit up the Eredivisie with Ajax since he burst onto the scene last season.

The Golden Boy winner of 2018 is already the captain of his club at just 19 and was dominant at the back during Ajax's shock 4-1 win over Real Madrid.

De Ligt has had the perfect senior figure to look up to when honing his skills with fellow countryman Virgil van Dijk partnering up with him on many occasions for the Netherlands.

Van Dijk is another defender who has emerged as potentially one of the best in the world since joining Liverpool for £75 million.

The 27-year-old has been a permanent fixture for Liverpool this campaign and will be one of the sung heroes if Liverpool manage to claim their first Premier League title.

De Ligt has already managed 100 games for his club and despite his strong allegiance with Ajax, a move to a bigger club is bound to be on the horizon sooner rather than later.

A potential pairing with van Dijk at club level could be an option for the youngster and de Ligt wasn't exactly against the idea when posed the question.

"Virgil (van Dijk) is a player who has experience in the top leagues," he said in a video on

"Of course, you would want to learn from him. It’s very helpful playing alongside him in the Dutch team," de Ligt added.

“It could happen (De Ligt joining him at Liverpool). He plays for Liverpool, a good club, but I’m not focused on them. I focus on Ajax and then I’ll see where I end up.”

A typically neutral response to a media question from a footballer, but there is enough in de Ligt's response to suggest he is very much open to the prospect of turning out for his club alongside van Dijk.

If van Dijk is that much of draw for him, then surely Liverpool are near the top of the list when it comes to a potential transfer.
