It hasn’t been a good day for English football.Earlier on Sunday, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish was punched by a Birmingham City fan who’d run onto the pitch during the first half. The supporter in question was subsequently arrested by West Midlands Police and will be permanently banned from St. Andrew’s.Hours later, in the Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester United, an Arsenal fan ran onto the pitch and appeared to push Chris Smalling. The man in question then attempted to join Arsenal’s celebrating players - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had just scored from the penalty spot to put the Gunners 2-0 up - before being led away by security.

ESPN’s Mark Ogden saw Smalling was pushed by the fan and tweeted about the incident.

BBC Sport also claim that the England defender was pushed.

Smalling was not hurt but, as with the earlier incident in the Midlands derby, it shows that more needs to be done to prevent these things happening.

Either fan could have been carrying a weapon and it’s conceivable that things could have been a lot worse in both cases.

“We’ll be back with fences if we’re not careful,” Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, who has called for Birmingham City to be several punished following the Grealish incident, said on co-commentary.

It remains to be seen what action will be taken against the Arsenal fan, although a lifetime ban from the Emirates Stadium is surely a real possibility.

The Gunners earned all three points thanks to a Granit Xhaka strike and Aubameyang’s penalty.

They now leapfrog United into fourth spot with eight matches of the season remaining.
