Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been a revelation at Manchester United this season.

The trip to Arsenal on Sunday was just the second defeat of his four-month reign and the Red Devils had a number of opportunities to take the lead at the Emirates Stadium.

It was perhaps accumulated fatigue that caused Solskjaer's first loss in the Premier League, but it speaks volumes that supporters were barely disappointed with the result.

Of course, victory in north London would have been huge for their top four chances, yet it's impossible to overly criticise Solskjaer when he has instigated such a dramatic change.

United were playing incredibly negative football under Jose Mourinho and the managerial switch has encouraged a far more positive atmosphere at Old Trafford.

Man Utd's remarkable form

And by the time Marcus Rashford fire home the winning penalty at Paris Saint-Germain, it seems every single United fan was sold on the idea of Solskjaer taking over.

Nevertheless, United have refrained from naming him their permanent manager quite yet and Mauricio Pochettino's name continues to creep into the odd report.

But with 14 victories across his 18 games in charge, it seems an inevitability that Ed Woodward will give the club legend a long-term contract.

Solskjaer on the verge of appointment

According to the Mirror, that could happen even sooner than expected and it's claimed that Solskjaer will be unveiled as Mourinho's permanent replacement during the international break.

The report reads: "The former United striker is now the only contender for the post, and the club's top brass have already decided to make him their next permanent manager.

"Initially, the plan was to leave the decision on Mourinho's full-time successor until the end of the season but United are now ready to bring it forward so they can get a headstart on planning for next season.

"They will pay the 46-year-old’s Norwegian club, Molde, a compensation package of around £8m as he is set to leave his post as their manager to take over full-time at Old Trafford."

A round of applause for Mr. Solskjaer.

United will lock horns with Wolves at the weekend in their latest FA Cup clash, but it seems Solskjaer will secure his new contract before they resume their Premier League campaign.

The international break seems the logical juncture for Woodward to tie down his 'only contender' and they can start laying down their strategy for next season.

It seems inevitable that Solskjaer will request new signings as - despite the recent success - United are still a long way behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

However, if Solskjaer can maintain the team's current momentum into his permanent tenure, fans can expect plenty of success in the years to come.
