Niko Kovac admits Liverpool were better than Bayern and deserved to go through

Niko Kovac was full of praise for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool

Liverpool enjoyed another incredible night of European football against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Reds were underdogs to progress to the quarter-finals after both sides cancelled each other out at Anfield.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side were superior throughout in Germany as they cruised to a 3-1 victory.

Sadio Mane got the away side off to a superb start after brilliantly finishing past Manuel Neuer in the 26th minute.

Bayern improved after falling behind and restored parity when Joel Matip scored an own-goal five minutes before half-time.

But Liverpool were the better side in the second 45 minutes, with goals from Mane and Virgil van Dijk sealing their passage to the last eight.

It was an extremely poor night for Niko Kovac.

Bayern had home advantage and were favourites to go through, but they were well and truly second best in Germany.

And Kovac recognised that fact after the game.

He showed true class after watching his side go out as he congratulated Klopp and admitted that Liverpool deserved to go through.

Niko Kovac watches on as Liverpool knocked his side out of the Champions League

"We had a strong opponent and we have to congratulate Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp," he told Sky, per Goal.

"They were better in these two matches and we deserved to lose. The opponent attacked us very high and left no spaces, that made it difficult for us.

"On top of that it was not our best day. Liverpool are a top team in Europe and they showed us our limits.

"You saw after the second goal how much quality they have.

"We still have two titles to fight for. We're top in the Bundesliga and we're still in the cup. Our goal is to win both of these competitions."

Niko Kovac was very complimentary of Jurgen Klopp

Pure class from Kovac.

Most managers tend to make excuses after their team exit a major competition; but not the 47-year-old.

He was fully aware how good this Liverpool side is and praised them thoroughly.

Klopp was also adamant that the win for Liverpool was deserved.

"The second half was very mature," said Klopp, per BBC Sport.

"In the moments we did play football we immediately destroyed the organisation of Bayern. It's absolutely deserved."
