Liverpool are planning a January move for Shaun Wright-Phillips, according to fresh reports.

After a Reds bid for the Manchester City winger was initially mooted by The Sun last month, there has been growing speculation that the 29-year-old could be on his way to Merseyside.

And now, according to, Liverpool are ready to table an offer of £5 million for the former Chelsea speedster.

Wright-Phillips joined the Londoners for £21 million from City in 2005 before moving back in the opposite direction three years later after struggling to make an impact at Stamford Bridge.

However, the England international has failed to feature regularly at City under boss Roberto Mancini and the Eastlands side are reportedly ready to entertain offers for the out-of-favour attacker.

This has put Liverpool on red alert as they look to draft more potent attacking options to Anfield in January in order to ease the goalscoring burden on Fernando Torres.

Roy Hodgson has frequently stated his desire to bolster his attacking ranks come the New Year as Liverpool can currently only boast Torres, Dirk Kuyt and David Ngog among their first team striking number.

Along with Wright-Phillips, the Liverpool boss is also thought to be keeping tabs on Spurs outcast David Bentley and Bolton star Johan Elmander as he continues to identify potential targets who are capable of dragging the Anfield club into the much coveted Champions League places.

Hodgson will reportedly have upwards of £20 million to spend on new recruits when the transfer window opens as new Liverpool owners NESV look to back their manager in the transfer market.

Liverpool have also been linked with Aston Villa ace Ashley Young and Ajax captain Luis Suarez as 'silly season' approaches.
