What a week it's been for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Just as Juventus teetered on the edge of a shock Champions League exit, the mercurial 34-year-old came to their rescue with a stunning performance against Atletico Madrid.

The Old Lady had succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg, only for Ronaldo to score a stunning hat-trick at the Allianz Stadium with two headers and a pressure penalty.

And Ronaldo was keen to get his own back on Diego Simeone who produced a somewhat controversial celebration at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The Atletico manager was slapped with a hearty fine after gesturing towards his crotch area, gesticulating to the crowd that he had the 'cojones' to defeat Juventus.

Ronaldo copies Simeone's celebration

However, that quickly backfired as their 2-0 lead crumbled and Ronaldo replicated that very celebration just seconds after converting his spot kick.

It was a triumphant moment for the Portuguese in a similar way to his shirt celebration mimicking Lionel Messi and his impression of Sepp Blatter after the FIFA president had mocked him.

This time, though, trying to get on level terms could come back to bite Ronaldo and it perhaps shouldn't be surprising when you consider the sanctions Simeone was slapped with.

Atletico considering a complaint

According to a report from Spanish publication AS, Atletico are considering filing an official complaint against the ex-Real Madrid forward.

The report explains: "Atlético de Madrid are still furious with Cristiano Ronaldo for the attitude he showed on the final whistle of this week's Champions League return leg in Turin.

"AS understands that the club are considering presenting a formal complaint to UEFA.

"If UEFA open a case against Cristiano, he could be served an economic fine similar to the one Simeone was given and possibly be hit with a suspension (from one to three games) if UEFA decide that Cristiano's behaviour could be construed as inciting violence."

The problem for Ronaldo is his decision to direct the gesture at Atletico fans and he was caught on camera shouting 'them motherf***ers' at the travelling support.

Meanwhile, Simeone has explained that his own gesture was actually directed at the home support and therefore wasn't trying to rile those from Italy.

It seems the ball is in Atletico's court now and despite crashing out of the Champions League, they still have the opportunity to raise their case.

It would be a huge blow for Juventus if Ronaldo was subsequently banned for their quarter-final against Ajax and maybe then, revenge wouldn't taste so sweet.
