Wayne Rooney's first season at D.C. United was a success.The English striker joined the MLS club in July, half-way through the season.At that point D.C. United were last in the MLS Eastern Conference and way off a play-off berth.However, Rooney's arrival sparked a turn around.His team eventually made the MLS playoffs but were knocked out by Columbus Crew SC.

Still, Rooney managed 12 goals in 21 games and was named D.C. United's MVP and golden boot winner for the 2018 campaign.

And he looks to have picked up this season where he left off.

D.C. United are currently top of the Eastern Conference having picked up seven points from their opening three games.

And Rooney excelled in their victory against Real Salt Lake as he managed to score a hat-trick.

The Englishman opened his tally for the season with a 34th minute penalty.

He then showed exquisite composure for his second goal, dinking the ball past the goalkeeper just before half-time.

And he completed his hat-trick 25 minutes from time as he netted into an open goal.

That was his first MLS hat-trick.

Rooney may now be 33 years old, but he's clearly still got it.

He reacted to his three-goal haul after the game.

"We were expecting a tough game. We started okay, we were sticking to our game plan, which we worked on," he said.

"The first goal helped us, then the red card made the game a bit different to what we planned for.

“We were clinical. We had chances.

“It’s always a strange game when two players get sent off but it was a comfortable night in the end.

“To score a hat-trick is always great. I’m very pleased with getting the three goals.

“And I’m pleased for the team. It was a great victory for us. To come away with seven points from our first three games is a good tally for us. The three clean sheets are big for us."
