Mario Balotelli has made a fine start to his Marseille career. The Italian striker’s contract with Nice was terminated in January but he remained in Ligue 1, signing a contract until the end of the season with Marseille. And the club have to be happy with their investment, with Balotelli scoring five goals in eight appearances.Yet the former Man City and Liverpool forward couldn’t get on the scoresheet and Marseille fell to a 3-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.A brace from Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe’s first-half goal handed the hosts all three points as they made it 25 wins from 28 Ligue 1 matches.

Marseille actually got back into the game when Valere Germain scored to make it 1-1 early in the second half.

But their chances of getting anything out of the game were dealt a blow when goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was sent off for handling the ball outside the area.

Balotelli planned a Rashford celebration

It’s an almighty shame that Balotelli couldn’t find a goal, for he had an incredible celebration lined up.

According to Canal+ journalist Olivier Tallaron, the 28-year-old wore a t-shirt with Marcus Rashford’s face on it that he planned to reveal if he scored at the Parc des Princes.

The reaction inside PSG’s stadium if that happened would have been something else. Rashford was, of course, responsible for knocking the French giants out of the Champions League, his last-gasp penalty handing Manchester United a 3-1 win in their recent meeting.

It would have been just as iconic of an image as Balotelli’s ‘Why Always Me?’ shirt.

Balotelli expressed his disappointment at the result at full-time, writing on Instagram: “Together we win and together we lose!

“Sorry the supporters for this game but we are strong and it’s not a lost match that will kill us.”
