Lionel Messi has scored some incredible solo goals down the years for Barcelona.

Getafe in 2007, Real Madrid in 2011 and Athletic Bilbao in 2015 are three of many stunning solos in the Argentine's collection, which is only growing in size.

No one is as good as Messi when it comes to creating his own chances; he always manages to find pockets of space to collect and ball, dribble and then shoot.

One of his finest solo goals came nine years ago today (Thursday 21 March) during a 4-2 win over Real Zaragoza, where he also scored a hat-trick.

In the 66th minute, Messi out-muscled Manchester United's Ander Herrera to win the ball, skipped past another opponent and then charged towards goal.

He twisted and turned to evade two more defenders before lashing the ball past the goalkeeper and into the bottom-right corner.

Messi wheeled away in celebration and it's safe to say the two commentators in the commentary box were left absolutely stunned.

"You’re just lost for words," said one of them. "This man is brilliant. Georgie Best, Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff - they’re all getting outshone by this incredible little man."

And the co-commentator replied: "Well, I've said it so many times this season, he's the best on the planet - and that's one of the reasons why."

Messi was just 22 years old at the time yet he was showing signs of becoming the greatest footballer of all time. Fast forward nine years and he's achieved that status.

Insane. Messi ended the 2009/10 season as La Liga's top goalscorer on 34 goals, with Barcelona also winning the title. The rest, as they say, is history.
