Ander Herrera has less than four months remaining on his Manchester United contract.

Despite impressing supporters throughout his five years at Old Trafford, the Spaniard could be just a few weeks away from leaving the Premier League on a free transfer.

The Red Devils have been fighting against a squad exodus with all their contract complications and the Herrera scenario is quickly emerging as one of the most desperate.

Considering many United fans deem him worthy of the club captaincy one day, it would be a massive blow for Herrera to abandon the renaissance under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The fact Herrera has been performing so impressively recently means that top European clubs will be sniffing around, trying to deliver a similar coup to Juventus' deal for Aaron Ramsey.

PSG's interest in Herrera

So, it will have been alarming for United fans to see reports in the European press that Paris Saint-Germain were interested in their Spanish midfielder.

RMC Sport and Marca were amongst the publications claiming that Herrera could make a shock move to the Parc des Princes, potentially as a replacement for Adrien Rabiot.

The latter report claimed that Herrera was 'close' to an agreement, having been offered a contract that would see him earn €170,000-a-week.

Herrera keen to sign new deal

However, ESPN have now swung in to try and clarify the situation, claiming that Herrera remains keen on prolonging his stay in English football.

Sources have informed ESPN that Herrera wants to sign a contract extension at Old Trafford, in spite of the PSG interest which seems to have been confirmed.

This latest development could be the reality check that United need to wrap up negotiations, having been involved in contract talks with Herrera's representatives over the summer.

The report goes on to explain: "PSG are looking into potential signings ahead of next season with a desire to atone for this campaign's Champions League embarrassment - at the hands of United."

ESPN conclude the article by saying that, despite claims to the contrary, Herrera is 'far from decided' on any move away from Manchester.

So, it seems as though the ball is in United's court and it's within their power to ensure Herrera pens the long-term contract he desires.

With Antonio Valencia apparently leaving in the summer, Ed Woodward and his team could even tempt the 29-year-old with the prospect of the captain's armband.

Make a mistake, though, and the French champions will be waiting in the wings.
