The Premier League season is nearing it's conclusion and the end of season awards will soon be given out.

Mohamed Salah won the Premier League Player of the Season last term, but it's fair to say that he will not hold on to his crown.

Instead, it is Virgil van Dijk who is the favourite for the award.

The Dutchman has been sensational so far this season as Liverpool are mounting a challenge for their first Premier League title.

The Reds currently hold the best defence in the league, having conceded just 18 goals in 31 games.

And the majority of the public think he deserves the award, too.

Sky Sports recently ran a poll, with 59% of the public thinking he should win the award.

But that is not the view adopted by Robbie Savage.

The Welsh pundit has argued in his latest column for the Mirror that Raheem Sterling deserves the accolade.

View his top six below:

1. Raheem Sterling

2. Virgil van Dijk

3. Sergio Aguero

4. Fernandinho

5. Paul Pogba

6. Heung-min Son

Savage wrote of Sterling: "He has become one of the most effective players in world football.

"In all competitions for City this season, he has scored 19 goals and supplied 16 assists – an extraordinary individual contribution in a team so breathtaking to watch all over the park."

Savage did have some words of praise for Van Dijk, though.

"Van Dijk has looked the best centre-half in the world, and he is the biggest single factor behind Liverpool having the best defensive record in all four divisions," he wrote.

"In today’s market, a player of VVD’s quality would cost at least twice as much, possibly £175-200m, and he’d be worth every penny."

Interestingly, Savage also has Pogba in his top six.

The Frenchman was largely anonymous for the first few months of the campaign but has improved dramatically since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over as Manchester United manager in December.

"Pogba has been the poster boy for Manchester United’s dramatic transformation under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer," he wrote of Pogba.

"Now he is providing goals, assists, power and drive from his best position, he looks like a World Cup winner again."

But, there is no room for either Eden Hazard or Sadio Mane on his shortlist.
