John Cena is now in the bracket of WWE superstars whose WrestleMania availability is now up in the air.

Now that he's transitioned into a part-time role, Cena has featured less and less on WWE programming, similar to what fans had to adjust to when The Rock made the same exact switch.

WRESTLEMANIA

WrestleMania 34 was a strange one for Cena, with the confusion surrounding a match against The Undertaker leaving the fans slightly underwhelmed.

Even though it did end up taking place, the squash match was not exactly the dream match fans had envisaged between the two legends on the Grandest Stage of Them All.

This year, however, all has been quiet on both fronts.

Nobody really knows whether The Deadman will be competing and everything also seems to be secretive for Cena - even though he was rumoured to be the final opponent for Kurt Angle.

That spot now sits with Baron Corbin, even if the WWE could end up switching that around.

Now, the Wrestling Observer has revealed that the WWE did, in fact, have championship plans for Cena at WrestleMania 35 which has now been scrapped.

UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP

According to the source, WWE initially intended on having Cena challenge Samoa Joe for the United States Championship.

It's a match that was heavily teased over the last couple of years, with the company also fueling the fire by releasing videos of their careers to suggest the two will eventually face off - having avoided each other during Joe's stint in WWE.

As we know, the plan is to now have Joe defend the championship against fellow SmackDown LIVE superstar, Rey Mysterio.

However, the source has also reported that had Cena challenged Joe, then fans would have been treated to another singles match between Andrade 'Cien' Almas and Mysterio.

Now, both Cena and El Idolo haven't been confirmed for any matches, although it's thought that WWE does have plans for Cena at the event.

With no clear direction for Cena, fans are now wondering what the WWE has up their sleeve after what proved to be a disappointment last year.
