MS Dhoni’s Chennai took on Virat Kohli’s Bangalore in the opening game of the 2019 Indian Premier League. It was the Super Kings who got off to the perfect start as they bowled out a star-studded Royal Challengers side for a measly 70 runs. The big moment came with the 21st ball of the match, when veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh took the wicket of the best batsman in the world, Virat Kohli.

RCB’s conveyor belt of superstars continued to disappoint, as first Englishman Moeen Ali helplessly chipped the ball up to Harbhajan for a regulation caught and bowled.

Then the dangerous AB de Villiers was expertly caught by Ravindra Jadeja on the boundary off the bowling of Harbhajan, who claimed his third wicket of the game.

The misery continued for Kohli’s men as South African international Imran Tahir put on a bowling performance for the ages.

RCB had no answers for Tahir’s guile and spin as the tricky leg-break bowler finished with three wickets for nine runs off his four overs.

In the modern day game, that is nothing short of remarkable.

In response, CSK had to dig deep as the conditions allowed the bowlers to continue to dominate.

The usually reliable Shane Watson struck out at the top of the order, as he was sent back to the dugout by spinner Yuzvenra Chahal for a 10-ball duck.

That was about as exciting as it got for the away side in the run chase.

Unlike RCB, Chennai’s middle order weathered the onslaught from Bangalore’s attack as they cantered to victory with relative ease.

It wasn’t a game that will live long in the memory, but it was a huge statement to the rest of the league from the three-time winners.

Chennai aren’t just here to play games, they are here to win it all.
