J'Neil Bennett scores Tottenham's first goal in their new stadium

Tottenham Hotspur finally got to play a game at the new ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’ on Sunday afternoon.

No, it wasn’t the senior side – that’ll have to wait until next month – but the Under 18s got to host Southampton Under 18s.

Youth games hardly hold too much significance for Premier League clubs but this truly was a historic moment for Spurs.

Construction officially began in 2012 and the stadium itself has been worked on for fours years, leaving the team without a home for nearly two years.

It’s become pretty normal to see Spurs playing at Wembley but it’s never felt like their home – not to the team or the fans.

They were, of course, supposed to move in at the start of this season and were made to wait. The new era is finally underway, though.

And with the first game came another historic moment: the first goal.

That honour fell to 17-year-old J’Neil Bennett, who gave Spurs the lead 11 minutes in with a very nice finish.

You can check out the goal below:

It was the first in a 3-1 win for the team – exactly how it would have been planned, opening the stadium with a win and an opener from one of their own.

And the latter was something echoed by several Spurs fans:

This game was a ‘test’ match with the attendance capped at 30,000 fans but things will be a little different next month.

Spurs host Crystal Palace on the April 3 in what will be the big kick-off for the new stadium.

One man who’s certainly excited is Mauricio Pochettino, who was interviewed on the pitch at half-time.

“I think it is unbelievable, it is so difficult to explain in only a few words,” he said.

“We all feel the same, so excited, I got the same feeling when we left White Hart Lane on the last day, we were crying and now in the first day in the new stadium, we feel the same emotion.

“We need to cry because our dream became true.”

The Under 18s game was just a taste of what’s to come then – and it will only have whetted the appetite for next month.
