Virgil van Dijk has been truly magnificent for Liverpool this season. The powerful Dutch centre-back, who has transformed the Reds’ back-line following his £75 million move to Anfield from Southampton in January 2018, is the current favourite with the bookmakers to win the PFA Player of the Year award ahead of Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling. If Liverpool go on to win the Premier League title this season, Van Dijk will have played a major role in their success and would thoroughly deserve any individual award that comes his way.Remarkably, no player in the Champions League or Premier League has dribbled past Van Dijk this season. He hasn’t lost an aerial duel at Anfield since January, either. These stats tell you everything about his consistently excellent performances over the course of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, Van Dijk was made to look rather ordinary on Sunday evening by Germany’s Serge Gnabry while playing for the Netherlands in the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Gnabry, who previously played for Arsenal and now plies his trade for Bayern Munich, picked the ball up on the left wing and found himself in one-v-one with Van Dijk but still managed to score a quite wonderful goal.

The 23-year-old cut inside Van Dijk, who didn’t get close enough to his opponent, and then unleashed an unstoppable strike into the top corner of the net past Jasper Cillessen.

Watch it here…

Arsenal fans must be wondering why on earth Gnabry was allowed to leave their club back in 2016.

That is glorious.

As you can imagine, a lot has been made of the fact he got the better of Van Dijk in this one-v-one over on social media.

Here are a selection of tweets…

Gnabry’s goal made it 2-0 to Germany after Leroy Sane’s opener earlier in the first half.
