Declan Rice has made two appearances for England since announcing his intention to represent the Three Lions in February.

The 20-year-old made his debut as a substitute in the 5-0 win against the Czech Republic last week and played the full 90 minutes in Monday’s 5-1 victory against Montenegro.

Rice caused a stir when he rejected the Republic of Ireland for England, the country of his birth.

The West Ham midfielder, who has Irish grandparents, played for the Republic at youth level and received three senior caps in friendlies in 2018.

“This has been an extremely difficult decision and, in all honesty, not one I ever expected to be making at this stage of my career,” he said in a statement last month.

Yet his switch doesn’t sit well with fiercely proud Irishman James McClean.

The Stoke City winger has never hid his feelings for the Republic of Ireland but he did switch allegiance after making seven appearances for Northern Ireland’s Under-21s.

McClean hits out at Rice

But McClean admitted at the time of the switch that he didn’t feel part of the Northern Ireland squad, and he’s now criticised Rice for rejecting the Republic.

"He said he was a proud Irishman. Then he said he was a proud Englishman. If he's both... good luck to him but I don't buy it. I think you're either one or the other,” the 29-year-old told RTE.

“I was with Derry City when I got the call-up to play for the North and I turned it down because it's not my country, it's never been my country. I'm an Irishman.

"It's not just Declan, it's anyone else. If you're not proud to be here and we're a stepping stone then sod off and play for someone else.

“I’m an Irishman. I grew up on the island of Ireland, simple as that.

“We only want players here who want to play for Ireland, who feel Irish and are proud to be Irish."

He’s certainly pulled no punches.

Rice’s decision was always going to upset a few people but Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy wished the youngster well after being informed of the switch.

“Declan rang me today and said he has decided to give it a go with England. Good luck to him,” McCarthy said, per Sky Sports.
