Manchester United have wanted a centre-back for some time.

It's no secret that Jose Mourinho wanted to strengthen the position last summer.

The club were linked with countless names, including Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire and Jerome Boateng.

But, Mourinho was unable to get any reinforcements in that position.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has since replaced Mourinho and they have continually been linked to more centre-backs.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Raphael Varane have been named as two potential signings in what would be big money transfers.

However, according to the Daily Mail, United no longer think improving the centre of their defence is a necessity.

Their report states that Man United are now happy with their defensive options.

The club have noticed the improvements the team has made in defence since Solskjaer's arrival.

Since the Norwegian's appointment, United are second in the Premier League only to Liverpool based on goals conceded and clean sheets.

Buying a big money centre-back in the summer remains a possibility, but now United will instead prioritise buying a right-back and a central-midfielder instead.

That's good news for Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly.

Lindelof has perhaps been United's most improved player since Solskjaer's arrival and is now one of the first names on the team sheet.

He paid tribute to his manager earlier this week, telling Sky Sports: "If he gets the job, I will be pleased.

"It's not my job to decide in the end, but, of course, I'm very happy with the things that he has done since he's arrived. I have nothing bad to say about him.

"He's a legend of the club, so he knows everything about being here as a player, so when he speaks to you, you always listen.

"He knows what he's talking about because he has been through it all. That's also a very good thing to have.

"He's been amazing since he arrived and he came here with a big smile on his face and I think that was important for all of the players.

"He spoke to me and told me to do the things that I'm good at, to show my abilities and to express myself on the pitch. That was very nice to hear."
