It’s going to be a very important summer for Manchester United.

The club are set to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as permanent manager after the Norwegian’s impressive spell as interim boss.

And Solskjaer will be tasked with turning United into title challengers once again.

But the truth is, they’re still a long way from league leaders Liverpool and Manchester City.

The Red Devils are fifth, 18 points off Liverpool and 16 behind City.

The appointment of Solskjaer alone won’t be enough to bridge that gap.

Instead, they will need to sign a few quality players to compete with their rivals.

But who?

Well, according to the Daily Mail, Solskjaer wants to bolster options at right-back and in central midfield.

And the newspaper has revealed six players that ‘find themselves on the club's radar’ ahead of the summer transfer window.

Of course, a lot will depend on whether the club will be playing Champions League football next season or not...

Let’s take a look:

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Position: Right back, Cost: £40m

With Antonio Valencia leaving, Ashley Young turning 34 this summer, Matteo Darmian’s Old Trafford career all but over and Diogo Dalot still adjusting to life in England, United desperately need cover at right-back.

Wan-Bissaka has been brilliant for Crystal Palace this season and has a very bright future ahead of him.

In fact, no player in Europe's top five leagues had made more successful tackles than the 21-year-old.

Palace won’t want to sell but £40 million could be enough to test their resolve.

Joao Cancelo

Position: Right back, Cost: £65m

If Wan-Bissaka is deemed too inexperienced, 24-year-old Cancelo could be the answer.

The Portuguese only joined Juve last summer for £35 million but has impressed in Italy.

That’s attracted the attention of top European clubs but it also means the Old Lady will be very reluctant to sell him.

It would take a sizeable offer from United for Juventus to even consider allowing him to leave.

Saul Niguez

Position: Central midfield, Cost: £80m

Niguez could be involved in an almighty tug-of-war between United and Man City this summer.

The Red Devils may well be wishing they had moved for Saul last summer, instead of splashing £52 million on Fred.

Ivan Rakitic

Position: Central midfield, Cost: £55m

With Barcelona spending £65 million on Ajax sensation Frankie de Jong, Rakitic’s Barca career looks in doubt.

At the age of 31, United would be able to sign him for well short of his £108 million release clause.

Marco Verratti

Position: Central midfield, Cost: £90m

Verratti produced a sensational performance at Old Trafford in the Champions League as Paris Saint-Germain beat United 2-0 in the first leg of their last 16 clash.

That performance alone proved that Verratti can perform at the very highest level and he’s got a price-tag to match it - around £90 million will need to be coughed up for PSG to play ball.

Toni Kroos

Position: Central midfield, Cost: £50m

Kroos looked certain to leave Real Madrid this summer after falling out of favour under Santiago Solari.

However, after the return of Zinedine Zidane, the German may be persuaded to stay at the Bernabeu.

United are interested and Kroos could be tempted with a change of scenery and make the move he almost made back in 2013, when United had David Moyes in charge.
