Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign as permanent manager of Manchester United has only just begun.

The Norwegian was awarded the coveted job yesterday and will pocket a cool £7.5m from the Red Devils each year - more than Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

United are still firmly in the hunt for the top four and are in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where they will face Barcelona.

It promises to be an exciting and testing period for Solskjaer, but some of the new boss' attention will be on the summer transfer window.

Despite United winning 14 of their last 19 games, it is clear they need some serious investment to be Premier League title contenders once again.

A number of high-profile names have been linked with the Red Devils, from Real Madrid pair Raphael Varane and Toni Kroos, to Barcelona's Samuel Umtiti.

The latter could be offloaded by the Blaugrana due to his poor injury record and the impressive form of Clement Lenglet during his debut season in Catalonia.

However, there's no doubting Umtiti's ability, with the former Lyon man instrumental in France's World Cup win in the summer.

When fit, he's one of the best defenders around.

But former United man and Umtiti's countryman Mikael Silvestre doesn't see the Barcelona man as a 'Manchester United player'.

“Man United will always look to sign players with the X-factor, but I don’t see Samuel Umtiti as necessarily a Manchester United player," Silvestre said, per Goal.

"I think Eric Bailly has all the qualities Man United need in defence but United will always target the best, so who knows who might come in and they will always look to strengthen the squad.

"For me the focus would be the midfield.”

No X-factor, not the kind of player United need and inferior to Eric Bailly? Not sure many will agree with you, Mikael.

Umtiti is the complete defender, a powerful yet assured presence at the back and most rational observers of the game would say that he has the potential to really galvanise United's back-line.
