Wayne Rooney’s phenomenal football career now sees him plying his trade with D.C. United in Major League Soccer. The Manchester United legend joined the MLS outfit in 2018 and wasted no time in making an impact, scoring 12 goals in 21 games and winning D.C. United’s MVP award. The Washington-based franchise was inspired upon Rooney’s arrival. They were bottom of the Eastern Conference when he joined but managed to reach the 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs as a result of Rooney’s impressive performances. And so their aims are rather more ambitious for 2019. And so far, so good.Ben Olsen’s side lead the way in the Eastern Conference with three wins and a draw from four matches.Rooney has played his part, netting a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Real Salt Lake. And he was at it again during Sunday’s 2-1 win against Orlando City with an incredible free-kick.

Rooney's incredible free-kick

D.C. United won a free-kick, which Rooney won himself, in the 30th minute of the match. From close to the corner flag, a cross was expected.

But Rooney had other ideas and he sent his effort perfectly into the far corner for one of the best goals of his career.

This angle is better...

Just unreal.

Rooney also provided the assist for D.C. United’s opener, his free-kick being turned home by Steve Birnbaum.

D.C. United have made their best start in 13 years and are unbeaten in 14 regular season matches.

“Days like this come around, and there is a winning spirit about the group,” manager Olsen said at full-time, per the Washington Post.

“We have guys who can make plays. Hopefully we can grow from it, take some lessons. Lessons are easier with three points.”

With Rooney playing as well as he is, Olsen will be hoping that unbeaten run lasts a little while longer.
