Ahead of WrestleMania, the media spotlight has been shined on WWE, but not for the action in the middle of the ring. Instead, it's due to how they treat their superstars.During a segment on his TV show, Last Week Tonight, British comedian John Oliver criticized WWE for treating their superstars as 'independent contractors' so they do have to give them benefits like annual leave, pensions, and health insurance.Oliver also called Vince McMahon an 'a******' and talked about the clauses in certain contracts which state that WWE isn't responsible if a wrestler suffers permanent injury or death, even if they are negligible, and they can terminate a performer's deal if they are injured for six weeks or more.He also played clips from the likes of Jesse Ventura and Bret 'The Hitman' Hart criticizing Vince for his past actions, and made reference to CM Punk's concussion in 2013 and how he was asked by the medical team if he could still compete on the European tour, which was due to start the day after he suffered the injury. This has since been a topic of discussion amongst not only wrestling fans and past WWE superstars, but many members of the general public too thanks to the coverage it has received from many major news outlets, and it has caused WWE to release a statement too.

WWE said in a statement, via Pro Wrestling Sheet: "John Oliver is clearly a clever and humorous entertainer, however the subject matter covered in his WWE segment is no laughing matter.

"Prior to airing, WWE responded to his producers refuting every point in his one-sided presentation. John Oliver simply ignored the facts.

"The health and wellness of our performers is the single most important aspect of our business, and we have a comprehensive, longstanding Talent Wellness program.

"We invite John Oliver to attend WrestleMania this Sunday to learn more about our company."

CM Punk, on the other hand and unsurprisingly, completely agreed with what John Oliver said during his TV show.

Punk said in a tweet: "I s*** my britches, please RT @LastWeekTonight (I love you!) @iamjohnoliver"

Fightful has reported that they've spoken to many WWE talent, stating their responses on Oliver's report ranged from calling it 'hacky' to a 'home run'.

It's unclear if Oliver will take up WWE's offer and join them at WrestleMania this week, but it certainly looks like we haven't heard the last of this story just yet.
