Whether you love him or hate him, it’s hard to deny that Mike Dean is a top referee. After all, he’s spent 19 years as a Premier League official and has also taken charge of numerous international fixtures too.At 50-years-old, one of English football’s most famous refs is still going strong and on Tuesday night, he reached a personal landmark during Wolves vs Manchester United.Dean sent off Ashley Young and in doing so, became the first referee in history to show 100 red cards in the Premier League. That’s quite an achievement - and it’s fair to say that the Man United defender deserved to be on the receiving end of that 100th sending off.

Young was already on a booking when he lunged into a nasty looking challenge on Diogo Jota with just under an hour on the clock.

It clearly warranted a second yellow and Young could have little to complain about as he marched from the field of play.

Wolves would go on to make their numerical advantage count as they forced Chris Smalling to bundle the ball into his own net before holding on for a massive three points.

While it was a damaging evening for United in the race for the top four, the Red Devils simply could not blame it on the officials, who did a sterling job on the night.

Premier League officials have had to endure plenty of criticism this season after some shocking decisions while the introduction of VAR looms ever closer.

There is no questioning the standard of officiating has not been up to scratch of late but Dean has managed to maintain his reputation as one of the best whistle men in the game.

He may yet have a few more red cards to brandish before hanging up his whistle for good.
