Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League table thanks to a 2-0 win against Cardiff City on Wednesday.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane handed Pep Guardiola’s side all three points on an easy night at the Etihad Stadium.

The result means that City are now one point ahead of Liverpool in this exciting title race, with both teams having played 32 matches.

There are just six more still to go and the reigning champions have the slight advantage.

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock threatened to play the Under-23s following the awful officiating in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend and they probably wouldn’t have been much worse.

Man City outclassed their opponents from the very first whistle and were 1-0 up in the sixth minute.

Aymeric Laporte picked out De Bruyne and the Belgian fired home from an acute angle with his left foot.

Man City move top of the table

It was 2-0 minutes before half-time and the game at this point felt effectively over.

Riyad Mahrez’s cross found Gabriel Jesus and the Brazilian forward had the composure to chest the ball into Sane’s path.

The winger smashed it beyond Neil Etheridge for his ninth league goal of the season.

The second half delivered much of the same, with City pushing in search of a third.

They didn't have to leave second gear, such was the lack of threat posed by Warnock's side.

Next up for City is their FA Cup semi-final against Brighton on Saturday.

Guardiola’s side are next in action in the league when they take on Crystal Palace on April 14.

Meanwhile, Cardiff remain in the bottom three and will be desperate for a win when they face 17th-placed Burnley in a six-pointer on April 13.
