Peter Crouch wins overhead kick poll ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale

Burnley FC v Southampton FC - Premier League

Peter Crouch is not just a funny man - check out his brilliant podcast if you haven’t already - he’s also, of course, a brilliant striker.

His best days are now behind him, it’s fair to say - he turned 38 in January - but he’s still plying his trade in the Premier League with Burnley.

At his peak, Crouch was capable of scoring almost every different type of goal.

Unlike most 6ft 7in strikers - and, no, there aren’t too many of them about - Crouch wasn’t just a great header of the ball, he could also score volleys from all angles, he could finish after using his brilliant close control inside the penalty area, and he was also surprisingly good at overhead kicks.

It’s hard to think of a player of Crouch’s stature who has been as capable of scoring overhead kicks, with the man himself recently admitting he constantly practiced them as a youngster, taking inspiration from specialists like Hugo Sanchez.

Perhaps the best overhead kick of Crouch’s career came during his Liverpool days, in a Champions League match against Galatasaray in the 2006-07 season.

Crouch’s masterpiece was one of four goals that UEFA included on a Twitter poll for fans to name the best overhead kick.

The other contenders were Mario Mandzukic’s effort for Juventus in the 2017 Champions League final, Gareth Bale’s incredible strike against Liverpool in last season’s Champions League final, and Cristiano Ronaldo’s famous goal against Juventus while playing for Real Madrid last year.

These fan polls are often popularity contests - and this one was no different.

However, it was Crouch who came out on top - receiving more than half of the 154,341 votes - after calling on his fans to hijack the poll.

He tweeted on Wednesday: “These players have won loads. Give me a break. I could tell the kids who I beat 😬“.

And on Thursday UEFA confirmed that Crouch had been crowned as the Champions League’s overhead kick king.
