It has been a tough old season for Chelsea’s summer signing Jorginho. The pass-master was expected to be an integral cog in Maurizio Sarri’s ‘Sarri Ball’ project at Stamford Bridge but has so far flattered to deceive at his new home. After a positive start, Jorginho has struggled to stamp his mark on the Premier League and, while he leads the lot in terms of pass completion, has failed to register an assist in all that time. His lack of positivity and incisiveness has been a massive point of contention with Chelsea fans all season long with the Italian constantly snubbing opportunities to go forward in favour of a back pass.Having made a staggering 2752 passes this season - 200 more than next best Virgil van Dijk - it looks on the surface at least like the Italian has fulfilled his mandate beautifully.

However, there is a lot more to being an anchorman these days than completed passes and his lack of physicality and positional nous has been frightfully exposed by the rigours of Premier League football.

Sarri’s insistence on playing Jorginho has bordered on madness at times, especially considering that N’Golo Kante is being played out of position to accommodate him.

It did not take opposition teams long to figure out the former Napoli man at all, as the influence he seemed to have in the opening few games diminished with each passing week.

However, it seems that the Premier League had Jorginho’s number long before he even got going with Manchester City analyst Carles Planchart explaining how his team exploited weaknesses in the Italian’s game during their Community Shield tie.

Speaking at a Performance Analysis and New Developments in Football conference in Madrid this week, Planchart offered some fascinating insight into the process.

They had spotted that Jorginho was prone to being drawn forward when the opposition had the ball in defence and even trained specifically to exploit that flaw.

He then went onto show a video of City working on movements designed to catch Jorginho out before showing a video of City scoring against Chelsea having exploited that weakness to perfection.

Brilliant.

It just goes to show how vital a good knowledge of the opposition can prove to be and why clubs spend millions painstakingly analysing their rivals.

Sadly for Jorginho, City set the rest of the Premier League onto the scent and he has struggled ever since.

He might be the leading passer in the land, but there is not much else to write home about at the moment.
