Fight fans have been eagerly anticipating the rumoured return of Brock Lesnar to the UFC.

The 41-year-old has recently directed his focus to the WWE, only making one appearance in the octagon since his defeats to Cain Velasquez and Alistair Overeem almost eight years ago.

Lesnar's last outing in MMA ended in controversy when - despite winning a decision over Mark Hunt - the fight was ruled a no-contest after he tested positive for clomiphene.

However, it seems now is the perfect time for Lesnar to step into the octagon once again and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier seems the most likely opponent.

DC won the strap with a knockout victory over Stipe Miocic, defending the title against Derrick Lewis and then proceeded to call out Lesnar during his post-fight interview.

Lesnar returning to UFC?

Cormier remarked in November: “Brock Lesnar… when you come, bring that brand new WWE title too. I feel like being a WWE Champion too. Let’s go, let’s go Brock."

Of course, any fight would take place with the UFC and not in the world of wrestling, but fans might not have long to wait before Lesnar and Cormier exchange leather.

That's because Ariel Helwani has revealed that Dana White is lining up the bout for August, giving Lesnar an immediate shot at the heavyweight crown.

Cormier vs Lesnar this summer?

Lesnar won the heavyweight championship by knocking out Randy Couture in 2008, going on to defend the crown twice, and could recapture the accolade as soon as the summer.

Speaking to SportsCenter, Helwani explained: “The UFC wants (Lesnar) back, as of right now he wants to be back, they’re giving him a heavyweight title fight if he comes back.

“Daniel Cormier, the heavyweight champion, wants to fight him.

"Right now, the plan is for them to fight in August, later this summer, for that heavyweight championship.

"It’s not signed just yet, but that’s currently the plan.”

Basically, assuming the negotiations are successful, UFC fans could see a stunning heavyweight clash this summer and the pay-per-view numbers would be astronomical.

After all the fighting talk between Cormier and Lesnar, it only seems right that the contest is made sooner rather than later and UFC 240 could mark the perfect opportunity.

Of course, it would also see Lesnar take a step back from his commitments with the WWE, potentially seeing him drop the Universal title at this weekend's WrestleMania.

It's a long way from being wrapped up, but let's all keep our fingers crossed.
