Lionel Messi will go down in history as one of the greatest players to ever lace a pair of football boots.

He's won it all at club level for Barcelona - almost singlehandedly at times.

The Argentine is a nine-time La Liga winner, he's won the Copa del Rey six times and the Champions League on four occasions as well.

The personal accolades he's picked up are just as impressive. Messi is a five-time Ballon d'Or winner - tied with Cristiano Ronaldo for the most wins in history.

He has countless Golden Shoes and was also named the best player at the 2014 World Cup.

If we were to list all the accomplishments he's won throughout a 15-year career, we'd be here all night.

Truly, the Barca forward will be remembered as one of the greatest of all time. But all good things must come to an end.

Messi is 31 now and despite producing jaw-dropping performances week in, week out, he's at an age where the careers of most footballers are called into question.

Just how long does he have left at the top?

No one except for him really knows the answer to that, but Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has revealed when he expects Messi to hang up his boots.

"Leo Messi is our leader, he's the best player in the world of football, he's playing with us, he's playing fantastically, but we know it won't be forever," he said, in an interview with ESPN FC.

"Maybe in three, four or five years, Leo Messi will say: 'Ok, I am going to stop playing football.' So we are preparing our club for the future, for the time post-Leo."

As well as suggesting that Messi has a maximum of five years left at the top, Bartomeu also explained that the two parties are working on a new contract.

"We would like to renew his contract, that's the idea. I believe he still has many years in front of him and in the coming months we will sit down with him so that he has many more years at Barcelona.

"Messi is a one-club man. It's more than what he does on the pitch - his relationship with Barça will last forever. We want Messi to always be at Barca, whether that's playing or linked to the club."
