Arsenal spurned the opportunity to move above rivals Tottenham into third place after losing 1-0 to Everton at Goodison Park.

The Gunners stay fourth in the table but remain level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, and two points clear of sixth-placed Manchester United, with only six games of the season remaining.

Phil Jagielka netted the only goal of the game in the 10th minute, although both teams wasted chances to score the afternoon’s second goal over the next 80 minutes.

Jagielka capitalised on some poor Arsenal defending to stab home from close range early in the match.

That goal means Arsenal are still the only team in the Premier League who have failed to keep a clean sheet away from home this season.

Marco Silva’s side started brightly and were far the better team throughout the first half. They’ve bounced back impressively from the 3-2 defeat away at Newcastle on March 9, beating Chelsea, West Ham and now the Gunners.

Everton now move level on points with ninth-placed Watford and are only a point behind Leicester City and Wolves in seventh and eighth-place, respectively.

Emery raised eyebrows with his team selection prior to kick-off - in particular his decision to name Aaron Ramsey and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang among the substitutes.

The Spanish coach presumably had one eye on Thursday’s Europa League clash against Napoli.

However, something needed to change following a dreadful opening 45 minutes and Emery reacted by sending on both Ramsey and Aubameyang at the start of the second half.

The visitors improved after the break - in truth, they couldn’t get much worse - and had a couple of opportunities to level the scores early on.

However, it was Everton’s Bernard who spurned the best opportunity to score before the hour-mark. The Brazilian, who was lively all afternoon, found himself one-on-one with Bernd Leno but was denied by the German shot-stopper.

The final 30 minutes were largely end to end but this was an afternoon where profligacy in front of goal was rife.

You get the impression they could have played another hour and it still would have finished 1-0 to Everton.
