Mesut Ozil throws jacket at Marco Silva during Everton 1-0 Arsenal

Everton FC v Arsenal FC - Premier League

Mesut Ozil was named captain for Arsenal’s Premier League clash away at Everton on Sunday afternoon, but the German playmaker was unable to prevent his team from slumping to a 1-0 defeat at Goodison Park.

Phil Jagielka’s 10th-minute tap-in sealed all three points for the visitors.

Arsenal stay fourth in the Premier League table but spurned the opportunity to leapfrog third-placed Tottenham. They remain level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea, and two ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United, with six games left to play.

Unai Emery named Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Aaron Ramsey among the substitutes - presumably because he had one eye on Thursday’s Europa League clash against Napoli - but his gamble backfired.

The Spanish coach sent both players on at the start of the second half but, by then, the damage had already been done.

Arsenal had opportunities to equalise in the second half but failed to take their chances.

Then again, Everton could easily have ended the game with one more than one goal. They were the better team overall and deserved the three points.

Towards the end of the match, there was a curious incident involving Ozil after he was subbed off for Alex Iwobi.

Sky Sports’ cameras showed Ozil throwing his jacket towards Everton staff - later reported by the Daily Mail to be the Toffees’ manager Marco Silva - following a clash between the two sets of coaches on the touchline.

Emery and Silva clashed on the touchline after Shkodran Mustafi produced a rash challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

And Ozil reacted by throwing his jacket towards Silva - only for it to end up going closer to his own manager, Emery.

“Football is emotional,” Silva told Sky Sports after the match. “[Emery] wants the best for his team and I want the best for mine.”

Silva also told reporters after the match that he didn't notice Ozil threw his jacket at him.

The two coaches put their differences aside at the full-time whistle.

However, don’t be surprised if Ozil finds himself in hot water with the FA following his moment of madness.
