While he’s obviously brilliant in domestic and international competition, there’s something about the Champions League that brings out the absolute best in Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar has won the tournament five times during his illustrious career with Manchester United and Real Madrid - and is now hoping to lift the European Cup with Juventus this season. No player has scored more goals in Champions League history than Ronaldo, who has netted a remarkable 124 times in 160 appearances since 2003.He has also been the competition’s top scorer in seven different seasons, registering a personal best of 17 goals during the 2013-14 campaign. There’s a strong argument to suggest Ronaldo is the best player in Champions League history.

Only Francisco Gento has more European Cup winners’ medals (six) in his collection - and all of those were sealed as part of the legendary Real Madrid side that dominated the competition during its formative years.

Ronaldo, who turned 34 in February but still believes he has many years ahead of him at the highest level, will be desperate to equal Gento’s record this season.

He’s missed the past couple of games through injury but will almost certainly start for Juventus against Ajax at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening.

This is, of course, bad news for Ajax.

Ronaldo has been devastatingly effective in many Champions League quarter-finals, scoring some of the best goals of his career at this stage of the competition in the process.

He scored his famous long-range screamer against Porto in the quarters - arguably his best goal for Man Utd - and his iconic overhead kick while playing for Real Madrid against his current employers Juventus last season.

Don’t bet against him adding one or two more quarter-final worldies to his collection over the next eight days.

Juventus welcome Ajax back to Turin for the second leg on April 16.
