Fernandinho elbowed Harry Kane during Spurs 1-0 Man City

Tottenham managed to defeat Manchester City 1-0 in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday night.

Spurs went into the tie as the underdogs and it looked as if they would go a goal down when the visitors were given a penalty.

Raheem Sterling's goal-bound shot after 11 minutes struck the arm of Danny Rose.

Nothing was given at the time but, after consultation with VAR, the referee awarded a penalty.

But Hugo Lloris would deny Sergio Aguero from the spot to ensure the game stayed level.

And, after a cagey second-half, Hueng-min Son found a way past Ederson with 12 minutes to go to give Spurs the advantage heading into the second leg.

The game was not without controversy, though.

The penalty decision has been met by criticism and Man City should have been down to 10 men in the first half.

Fernandinho and Kane challenge for the ball

Fernandinho completely wiped out Harry Kane in an aerial challenge as both players crashed to the floor.

The Brazilian midfielder landed on top of Kane and, when he was getting up, decided to elbow him in the back of the head.

Fernandinho then decided to push his opponent's head to the ground as he got up.

Watch the incident below:

That's pretty naughty from Fernandinho.

He's very lucky that the referee didn't take action.

If the incident did go to VAR, he would surely have been in big trouble.

Fair play to Kane too for not making a meal of Fernandinho's actions.

He could easily have exaggerated the pain but decided not to.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs fans are now calling on retrospective action to be taken as they push for Fernandinho to be banned.

One fan's tweet even saying that the incident is illegal in the UFC has gone viral.

While it was a good result for Spurs, they suffered a huge blow on the night as Kane limped off with a nasty ankle injury.

Mauricio Pochettino thinks he may now be out for the rest of the season.

Harry Kane later went off with an ankle injury

"It's a worry for us," Pochettino said, per the BBC. "We are going to miss him - maybe for the rest of the season.

"We hope it is not a big issue. But there is not to much time to recover. He twisted his ankle so we will see how it reacts in a few hours."

"We need to check but it looks like it is the same ankle and similar injury. It is very sad and very disappointing."
