Pep Guardiola is without doubt one of the best managers in football today.

His record speaks for itself. Eight league titles in three different countries, two Champions League wins and the FIFA World Coach of the Year award in 2011.

But, despite his list of honours, the Manchester City boss still has his critics.

Guardiola has managed three clubs where talent and money hasn’t been an issue.

At Barcelona he inherited a team that included Lionel Messi; Bayern Munich were the reigning champions in Germany when he arrived; and he’s been allowed to spend at will at Man City.

Many would like to see how Guardiola would fare when the odds weren’t in his favour.

And, having failed to win the Champions League since 2011, it’s easy to see why concerns are being raised about the 48-year-old.

Guardiola's record in CL away ties

Winning the Champions League isn’t easy, of course. But Zinedine Zidane has won it more times than Guardiola and he has only been a manager since 2016.

And with Man City trailing Tottenham 1-0 in their quarter-final tie, it may be another year without European glory for Guardiola.

The defeat on Tuesday, courtesy of Son-Heung min’s goal, means Guardiola’s misery in away ties in the knockout rounds of the Champions League continues.

In 26 Champions League knockout games away from home in his managerial career, Guardiola has won just six of them.

His teams have drawn 10 matches and lost 10.

It’s pretty incredible.

You have to go back as far as 2011 for Guardiola’s last victory in an away quarter-final match.

That was a 1-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk with a Barcelona side that included Messi, David Villa and Xavi.
