Scott McTominay's performance vs Barcelona left BT Sport pundits purring

Scott McTominay was sensational against Barcelona

Scott McTominay put in a brilliant performance for Manchester United against Barcelona on Wednesday night.

The youngster hasn't established himself as a regular for United but, due to injuries to Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera, he was given the opportunity to start.

And he was arguably the best player on the night.

Man United eventually lost 1-0, with Luke Shaw's own-goal proving to be the difference.

But, McTominay's performance was a huge positive for the English side.

The Scottish midfielder had his work cut out against Sergio Busquets in midfield, but he was still able to produce one of his best games in a United shirt.

BT Sport pundits all raved about him after the game.

Gary Lineker started off the praise, saying: "Scott McTominay I thought was excellent tonight.

"He was probably Manchester United's best player if not the best player on the pitch."

Rio Ferdinand added: 'He grew into the game. He's grown in stature. Today, his energy, his intensity... he was the catalyst for a lot of good things that happened.

"There are sometimes performances that make you grow in stature and make you feel part of the first-team.

"He's added to his name. He was very, very good. He was positive, he was reliable, he was aggressive.

"He's proven to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he can be trusted, which is vital for a young player."

Owen Hargreaves also raved about McTominay, saying his performance was a 'defining moment' in his career.

"That's a defining moment against Barcelona," the former United midfielder said. "That's him now established. Really credit to him because that's fantastic.

"For a young man to be the best player on the pitch when Fred cost £50m, Pogba cost £90m, it's incredible."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also took the chance to mention the 22-year-old's performance.

"Scott McTominay was fantastic," he said, per the Metro. "Every time he plays for us he is improving.

"He’s a great athlete, wins his challenges and quick on his feet. He started settling us to be fair [after United went behind]."
