Diego Costa has received an eight-game ban after making crude remarks towards the referee during Atletico Madrid's 2-0 defeat to Barcelona. In his report, referee Jesus Gil Manzano said Costa made comments about his mother."I s*** on your wh*** mother, I s*** on your wh*** mother," Costa is alleged to have said, per Manzano in his report.Manzano continued: "Once expelled, still on the field of play, he grabbed me by the arm in order to prevent me from showing the cards to teammates No.2 and No.24, respectively."The former Chelsea striker has now been handed an eight-game ban and he will not play again this season.

The incident happened in the first half of Atletico Madrid's eventual 2-0 defeat to Barcelona on April 6.

It was clear straight away that Costa must have said something bad to warrant a red card.

Costa's eight-game ban has been split into two separate punishments - four matches for what he said to Manzano and another four matches for grabbing the ref's arm.

It has since been reported by the Daily Mail that Los Rojiblancos may seek to sell Costa.

He has only appeared in 21 games this season and the return - just five goals - hasn't been impressive.

Is it worth keeping a 30-year-old troublemaker him around?

Spanish football correspondent Guillem Balague claimed Costa was found crying and pleading his innocence in the dressing room at full-time.

"Diego Costa was found crying in the changing room, apologising to his teammates and said 'I didn't say what was reported I said,'" Balague said on Eleven Sports.

Yet that hasn't been enough to spare Costa from a severe punishment.

Atletico Madrid do not have anything to play for after losing to Barcelona and being knockout of the Champions League at the round of 16.

So it's not as if Costa will be seriously missed.

Diego Simeone's side are second in La Liga and are far enough ahead to not have to worry about missing out on an automatic Champions League spot.
