Mercedes executed brilliant double pit stop during China GP

Lewis Hamilton won the 1000th Formula One Grand Prix as Mercedes sealed their third consecutive one-two finish in 2019 in as many races, putting them in a commanding position for the championship

It was the 34-year-old’s sixth win in China and he now leads the drivers' standings for the first time this campaign with 68 points, closely followed by teammate Valtteri Bottas with 62.

With Bottas and Hamilton claiming the top spots in the starting grid on Saturday, a Mercedes 1-2 always looked a likely result in Shanghai on Sunday.

And despite starting behind his teammate at the start, Hamilton got off the line quicker and by the time they were around the first corner, the Brit was ahead of Bottas and well positioned to win the race.

From that point on, the trailing Ferrari and Red Bull cars never really looked like challenging and yet Mercedes still took a bit what seemed a slightly unnecessary risk on lap 36 by choosing to pit both frontrunners at the same time.

In a bid to all-but rule out Sebastian Vettel's chances of getting into the top two, Toto Wolff put faith in his garage to execute both pit stops within seconds of each other.

And it worked to perfection.

The well-rehearsed act from the mechanics paid off as Hamilton was stationed in the pits for 3.2 seconds and immediately as he moved, Bottas was there to take his place.

The Finnish star neither had to slow down nor lose time waiting behind the reigning world champion for his own stop.

But before you had time to blink Bottas was heading back down the pit lane and could ease home behind Hamilton.

And it looked even more impressive from the pit crew's perspective.
