Juventus were most people's favourites to win the Champions League after Cristiano Ronaldo signed for the club last summer.

However, they were far from convincing in this season's competition.

Although they finished top of their group, a loss at home to Manchester United showed signs they could be exploited.

The Old Lady looked as if they would be heading out of the competition in the last 16 after losing 2-0 against Atletico Madrid in their first leg.

But, Ronaldo stepped up when his side needed him most, scoring an incredible hat-trick to keep their hopes of Champions League glory alive.

Their reward for making the quarter-finals was a tie against Ajax.

However, despite Ronaldo scoring in either leg, Juventus bowed out of the competition.

After a 1-1 draw in Amsterdam, Ajax would defeat Juventus 2-1 in Turin to knock the Italians out.

That means Ronaldo will not win the competition for the sixth time, while also extinguishing his hopes of four consecutive Champions League titles.

Understandably, the Portuguese international looked distraught at the end of the game.

He walked down the tunnel almost immediately after the final whistle in Italy and did not conduct any post-match interviews.

His mother has now spoken about the conversation she had with him after the game, while also revealing his feelings.

"He was sad, he would have liked to go to the final," she said, per CalcioMarcato. "I will be for there for the next one.

"What did he say to me? 'Mom, I don't work miracles'.

"The championship it's going well. In the Champions League, a bit of luck has been missing but we can't do anything about it, life goes on".

Sounds like Ronaldo was pretty emotional.

The 34-year-old has saved his side on multiple occasions in the past, but even he felt he was powerless to prevent his side losing the competition.

Max Allegri appreciated Ronaldo's contribution throughout the competition.

"Ronaldo has given us a lot over the course of the campaign, but when you reach the quarter-final, you need every player," he told Sky Sports after the game, per Goal.

“I’ve always said that to win the Champions League, you need to reach a certain stage in good form and with good fitness levels.

"We’ve been in a bit of an emergency situation for a while and that can only be sustained for so long.

“We were missing four or five players tonight. Daniele Rugani and Leonardo Bonucci had good games for 50 minutes or so, but we lost our unity and organisation, giving Ajax the advantage.

“[Matthijs] De Ligt was meant to be man-marked, but he got away. Details make the difference. On the three goals we conceded to Ajax, unfortunately two and a half counted as our gifts.”
